2021 Ford Explorer
Powerful yet versatile, the 2021 Ford Explorer promises to keep its place as one of Ford's best-selling SUVs. In addition to its bold and aggressive stance, this SUV's comfortable, high-tech cabin will take your travels to a whole new level. Let's explore more of the amazing features you'll find on the newest version of the popular Ford Explorer.
Trim Levels
The 2021 Explorer is available in the same five trim levels as last year's model: the Explorer, XLT, Limited, ST, and Platinum. When you opt for the base trim, you'll get stylish exterior features such as LED headlamps and taillamps, a power liftgate, and 18-inch painted aluminum wheels. New for the XLT is the availability of a Sport Appearance Package which gives it 20-inch wheels covered in a cool Carbonized Gray paint. This package also includes a mesh grille with Carbonized Gray accents and dual exhaust outlets.
Upper trims keep most of the same great elements featured on last year's models. However, other options you can add include a sunroof and a hands-free liftgate.
Engine
With the lower three trims, you'll find a capable 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine under the hood. This engine delivers 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. If this isn't enough power, you can upgrade to the Platinum or ST models to get a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine. This block puts out 365 horsepower in the Platinum, while in the ST it produces up to 400 horsepower. For 2021, the Limited trim is also available as a hybrid version. This power plant comes with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine paired with an electric motor that gives you 318 horsepower.
Performance
No matter which engine set up you go with, it will come mated to a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission that glides through the gears with ease. When you have your Explorer equipped properly, it can tow up to 5,600 pounds, which is pretty impressive for a midsize SUV. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the 2021 Explorer models, but you can still upgrade to all-wheel drive if you want additional traction.
Interior
A spacious interior provides three rows of seating for up to seven people, and a large cargo area ensures you have the space you need for your gear. Even at the base trim level, you can find exceptional features that make you more comfortable when you're on the road. This includes tri-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and an 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Safety Features
Ford vehicles are known for being tough, but they're also safe and reliable. With the 2021 Ford Explorer, you get advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and frontal collision mitigation as standard equipment. Upgrading your trim gains you access to additional safety technologies such as adaptive cruise control, a lane-centering system, parking sensors, an automated parking system, and adaptive headlights. You can also get a surround-view camera for a better view of what's around the vehicle when you're trying to maneuver it in tight spaces.
