Trim Levels
For the 2018 model year, the Explorer comes in five trim levels: the base model Explorer, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum. The base model starts off with exterior amenities such as 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, a liftgate spoiler, dual chrome-tipped exhaust, privacy glass, solar glass, automatic halogen headlamps, and LED tail-lamps. The XLT ups the ante with heated power side mirrors with LED turn signals and LED signature lighting, while the Limited trim gets LED fog lamps, chrome accents, and a hands-free liftgate. On the Sport trim, the Explorer dons roof rails, exclusive Explorer badging, and black accents. The Platinum trim finishes out the trim offerings with 20-inch alloy wheels, quad chrome-tipped exhaust, automatic LED low-beam headlights, Powerfold mirrors, and chrome accents. Choose from eight exterior paint colors on the 2018 Ford Explorer, including Agate Black, Blue Metallic, Burgundy Velvet, Oxford White, Ingot Silver, Magnetic Metallic, Ruby Red, and White Platinum.
Engine
The 2018 Ford Explorer comes with a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine on both the base model and the XLT, supplying 290 horsepower and up to 255 pound-feet of torque. Stock on the Limited trim and available on the base and XLT is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four. Although this seems undersized, it knocks out 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque thanks to its turbocharger. The top two trims of the Explorer come equipped with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged V-6 that packs a mighty wallop. With 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, it's the class of the fleet.
Performance
Front-wheel drive is standard on the 2018 Explorer, but the available all-wheel drive is an excellent choice for the off-road adventurer. When properly equipped, the Explorer can also pull up to 5,000 pounds with a minimum towing capacity (2.3-liter engine) of 3,000 pounds. The 3.5-liter V-6 offers fuel economy of up to 24 mpg, while the 2.3-liter gets as much as 27 mpg. The EcoBoost V-6 provides loads more power but still provides up to 22 mpg.
Interior
The massive interior of the Explorer is still one of its best traits, offering third-row seating that's good for up to seven passengers with bench seating or six passengers if you opt for comfortable bucket seats. With a full house, that still leaves room for up to 43.9 cubic feet in the rear or up to 81.7 cubic feet by folding all seats into the floor. Other standout features include dual-zone climate control, 12-volt outlets, a leather-wrapped shift knob, heated and ventilated seats, leather-trimmed seating, SiriusXM satellite radio, and an available 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot.
Safety
For the 2018 model year, the Ford Explorer collects a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for outstanding results in crash tests.
