In the eighteenth century, there were very few of the modern conveniences that we know today.

James Watt was an innovator. He created a steam engine that would put all other steam engines to shame. He wanted to sell these knew machines to coal mine owners, but they were skeptical. They weren't willing to stop using horses in their mines.

Watt had a plan. He watched the horses working in the mine and determined their workability. He found that the horses were able to move 33,000 pounds of coal one foot per minute and he called this unit of measurement, the horsepower.

Armed with this new measurement, Watt was able to show potential customers the advantages of having a steam engine.

The term horsepower became a standard unit of measurement for engines and is still in use today. If you want to learn more about horsepower and the modern vehicles that have the most, contact Hutch Ford Lincoln.
