1. Dawkins Line Trail

This trail measures around 18 miles long and is rated as moderately difficult by fellow hikers. The Dawkins Line Trail follows a railroad that was most recently used for coal hauling and crosses eastern Kentucky’s striking Appalachian region. The best thing about this trail is the fact that it is going to get even longer, with another 18 miles of trail planned.


2. Prestonsburg Passage Rail Trail

Measuring just under 9 miles, this easy trail is appropriate for hikers of all ages and abilities. The Prestonsburg Passage Rail Trail takes hikers on a journey underneath a canopy of trees and across several bridges. The highlight of this path has to be passing through the Middle Creek Battlefield site, which was a key battle during the American Civil War as it cemented Union control over eastern Kentucky, making this trail a must-do for history buffs in the area.


3. Rock House Trail

Measuring in at just under 1 mile, the Rock House Trail is a moderately difficult trail that takes hikers on a journey across multiple sandstone cliff faces. Hikers on this path will find themselves surrounded by an array of beautiful wildflowers that are not to be missed.


4. Cumberland Gap National Park Ridge Trail

This difficult trail is only for the most experienced of hikers in the West Liberty area. Measuring in at 20 miles, the Cumberland Gap National Park Ridge Trail offers hikers beautiful mountain views. Journeying through caves and alongside streams provides a great sense of adventure. 


5. Little Stony National Recreation Trail 

The Little Stony National Recreation Trail measures 6 miles and is rated as an easy trail by fellow hikers. This trail is perfect for nature lovers in the West Liberty area as it takes them on a journey past waterfalls and through a vast array of natural beauty. Hikers on this trail will also be able to take in fantastic scenic views of deep gorges.


6. Bark Camp Loop Trail

This easy trail measures just under 3 miles and is ideal for visitors in the West Liberty area with children. The Bark Camp Loop Trail takes hikers on a gentle lakeside hike that children will love as they bask in the trail’s natural beauty.
