A pepperoni pizzaEven in a small town like West Liberty, Kentucky, you can find great pizza. Along with big national chains like Pizza Hut and Little Caesar’s, West Liberty has local spots where you can enjoy a fresh slice with an innovative set of toppings and other Italian dinner options. While you might have to go for a drive to get to some of these pizzerias from West Liberty, you’ll soon discover that they are worth the trip.

  1. The Pizza Place

Sitting right in the middle of West Liberty on Main Street, the Pizza Place is a great spot to get a delicious pizza, and they make the dough on site. The sizes range from six to 16 inches, plus you can order calzones made with Philly steak ingredients and breadstick pizzas made with cheese and your choice of toppings. The Pizza Place also offers burgers and toasted subs, pasta meals, and even some Kentucky barbecue options like a pulled-pork sandwich and loaded BBQ fries.

  1. Giovanni’s Pizza

Giovanni’s is a regional chain restaurant with locations throughout Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. The franchise has built its popularity on strong Italian pizza recipes and a variety of other food items that change depending on which location you visit. The location in West Liberty sits right on Prestonsburg Street, and their pizza sizes go from 10 to 19 inches. They offer a simple list of classic pizza toppings along with some unusual items like the mac-and-cheese pizza and the BLT calzone. They also have hot subs and a buffet for lunch and dinner.

  1. The Hornet’s Nest Pizza and Grill

You’ll need to head down US-460 to Salyersville to find The Hornet’s Nest, but they offer some interesting variety along with some very tasty desserts. Like Giovanni’s, the Hornet’s Nest offers a straightforward list of pizza toppings along with a few interesting specialties like the BLT pizza, the BBQ pizza, and cinnamon pizza sticks you can have as an appetizer or dessert. Other desserts include apple dumplings, cheesecake chimneys, and plenty of pies. They also offer a buffet with lots of pizza options to choose from.

  1. Pasquale’s Pizza and Pasta

Pasquale’s Pizza is another drive away, this time up KY-519 to Morehead and East Main Street. Their pizzas are seven to 15 inches across, and their specialties are more traditional than you’ll find in other area pizzerias. You can see this in their toppings list, which includes pesto, anchovies, and fresh garlic. Aside from pizza, Pasquale’s also offers deep-fried mushrooms, potato skins, fish and chicken baskets, baked spaghetti, hot Italian sandwiches that include the Kentucky Filly, and stromboli.

America didn’t invent the pizza, but it did adopt it and make it one of the best and most common foods you can get no matter where you are in the country. From big cities like Louisville and Lexington to small towns like West Liberty and Salyersville, everywhere you go you can find a local joint that puts its own spin on the classic pizza pie.
