Whatever outdoor activities you enjoy, you’ll find a place that’s loads of fun in the heart of Eastern Kentucky. There’s something that will thrill everyone here, from family-friendly community playgrounds to unique military memorials. Get out and enjoy fresh air and sunshine with this list of parks in West Liberty.

Old Mill Park

Nestled on the banks of the Licking River, Old Mill Park has everything a wonderful community park should have. Get out and play with walking trails, picnic shelters with tables and grills, an amphitheater, a playground with swings, and an outdoor fitness area. All its family-friendly amenities make it a popular destination for outings with the kids.

It’s the ideal place to steal a few moments of relaxation by the river or join in on the fun with a periodic 5K challenge. This beautifully landscaped park is a scenic backdrop for your next photo shoot. It’s also the place to go for outdoor annual events such as the Bluegrass Festival held each July.

Licking River

One of the best things about the town of West Liberty is the Licking River. Several boat launches are scattered around town and provide easy access to the water. Get wet and wild on the river with activities such as canoeing and kayaking.

Sherman Landing at Old Mill Park is a terrific site to float your boat. It features concrete steps that lead to the pad, a sturdy handrail, and mounted rollers that make it easier to pack your canoe up and down the stairs.

Tredway Memorial Park

Tredway Memorial Park is one of only 12 of its kind. It’s a military monument that depicts the contributions of the armed forces’ many female service members. On display at this exceptional site are statues of three female soldiers. A military tank and Vietnam Memorial also sit on the grounds.

The memory garden is a testament to our freedoms, while the park’s large boulders are an interesting place to sit for a moment of reflection. Tredway is also a terrific place to spread out a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch under the canopy of mature trees. After lunch, explore the gazebo and take a stroll down the walking path.

DeLancey Park

DeLancey Park is in Cannel City. This town was the hub of the Block Cannel Coal Company and the Ohio and Kentucky Railroad’s operations at the turn of the century. The park is named after the president of these three companies: William DeLancey Walbridge.

Head to this local gem and see an original train caboose, picnic area, and walking trail. One of the most interesting things about DeLancey Park is that it is ground zero for the Pickin’ in the Park event. It was first held in 2013 to celebrate Cannel City’s history and featured local and regional artisans, craftspeople, and musicians. This annual event was the first of its kind in 105 years.
