Oil change | Hutch Ford in West Liberty, KYYou generally need to get an oil change for your Ford twice a year, but your Ford model, its age, how often you drive, and a few other factors can impact how often you need to get the oil replaced. Your reliable Ford dealer can let you know how frequently you should be stopping in for service next time you visit. You’ll also need to come by ASAP if you notice any of the signs that we’ve listed down below.

1. The Light Comes On

Modern Ford vehicles are equipped with a light that will turn on when you have a low oil level or if your oil is too low-quality to properly lubricate your engine. Words telling you that you need to get your oil replaced may show up on your dash. You may see an engine-shaped symbol instead, typical on older Ford models.

2. The Oil Level Is Low

Some modern Ford vehicles allow you to use the FordPass app to check your oil level. If your car doesn’t work with this app, then you should be checking the oil level manually using the dipstick. If you notice during one of your regular checks that your oil level seems to be low, then it’s time to stop in for a top-off or change.

3. The Oil Is Dark

Motor oil is light brown and translucent when fresh, and it naturally darkens as it cycles through the engine. Eventually, it thickens and becomes so dark that you can no longer see through it. This thick, dark oil can no longer lubricate your engine effectively, which can lead to reduced engine efficiency. It may also lead to engine damage.

4. The Engine Is Knocking

Engines get noisy when it’s been too long since your last oil replacement. You might notice a knocking noise under the hood. Any time you hear a new noise coming from your engine, it’s a sign you need to head to the dealer.

5. The Oil Is Gritty

Even if your oil isn’t thick and dark, it can become gritty. You should check its consistency every few weeks by feeling some of the oil on your dipstick, done easily with a paper towel. If there’s any coarseness or grittiness to it, then you need to get it changed. Motor oil is meant to feel slick between your fingers.

6. The Level Drops Rapidly

If your oil level drops rapidly, then you’ll need to get your oil replaced, and there’s probably a leak in the system. You’ll need to get to the dealer ASAP before you can drive again, because should you lose too much oil, then it won’t be safe to drive at all.

Stop in at Hutch Ford if you need new oil for your car or truck. We’re here to help you out with your routine maintenance as well as any issues your Ford ends up having during its lifespan.
