the 2019 Ford EdgeThe Edge is one of the best-selling SUVs from Ford, due to its comfort, impressive fuel economy, and great value. For 2019, it looks to improve its position in the competitive mid-size SUV segment with the introduction of a new trim level and a number of other significant changes. Learn about the most notable updates on the 2019 Ford Edge.

Addition of the ST Trim

By adding the ST to the 2019 Edge lineup, Ford has introduced its first performance-oriented SUV. This new model gets its power from a second-generation 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 that cranks out 335 horsepower. It is specially tuned to extract sharper responses from its eight-speed automatic transmission. In addition, Ford makes the all-wheel drive and paddle shifters standard in the ST to bolster its performance edge over the regular Edge models.

Powertrain Changes in the Regular Models

All regular 2019 Ford Edge models are fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. While this engine is carried over from last year, it now develops five more horsepower, bringing the total to 250. The previously available 3.6-liter V6 option is no longer being offered.

In addition, the six-speed automatic transmission of the previous year’s model has been replaced with a new eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive and auto start/stop are standard, and all-wheel drive is available as an option. According to Ford, the regular models will be more fuel efficient than before, but exact fuel-economy figures haven’t been released yet.

More Standard Safety Features

Following the lead of Toyota and Honda, Ford has added many advanced driver assistance technologies to the 2019 Edge’s list of standard safety features. These technologies include automatic high beams, forward-collision alert, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and lane-departure alert.

The SUV also receives a new evasive steering-assist system that uses forward radar and camera data to support and bolster defensive steering inputs. Additionally, the adaptive cruise control system has been modified to bring the vehicle to a complete stop when necessary and offer some self-steering capability on the highway.

Exterior and Interior Modifications

On the outside, the 2019 Ford Edge underwent some changes. These include a wider grille design, new standard LED headlights, and a reshaped hood, while still retaining its signature blocky and imposing look. The cabin remains unchanged, except for a reconfigured center console that can now accommodate a rotary-dial shifter. Newly standard in the latest Edge are a Wi-Fi hotspot that can support 10 devices and onboard data connection and a Ford+Alexa app that makes smart-home assistants accessible from inside the vehicle.

The 2019 Ford Edge will be available in SE, SEL, Titanium, and ST trim levels. The previous Sport model has been replaced with the ST. The addition of the ST gives the Edge a whole new personality, making it appealing to a wider range of SUV buyers. While prices aren’t available yet, you can expect the new Edge to offer good value. The 2019 Ford Edge should be available in auto dealerships this fall.
