For nearly 30 years, the Ford Explorer has been a shining example of the best in the SUV world. In 2019, it gets some new upgrades and updates that make it not only an adventurous option, but a stellar family car to boot. Whether you’re adding another kid to the litter or you’re just starting a family, the 2019 Ford Explorer has all the features parents and kids could want.

1. Safety Features

Thanks to a number of innovative active, driver-assist, and passive safety features, the 2019 Ford Explorer earns a perfect five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some of the SUV’s standard safety amenities include anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and an advanced air bag system. However, it’s also the only vehicle in its class to offer inflatable outboard second-row safety belts. During a collision, these seat belts inflate, pushing the body to the correct position to minimize injury from the impact.

Upper trims also offer driver-assist safety specs designed to keep an extra eye on the road. This includes options such as rain-sensing wipers, auto high-beam headlamps, a lane-keeping system that alerts the driver of drifting, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning with brake support. When you put it all together, the Explorer keeps an eye on the road — even when you can’t — keeping your precious cargo safe.

2. Loads of Cargo Space

Slotted between the midsize Flex crossover and the gargantuan Expedition, the 2019 Ford Explorer offers loads of cargo space without being too small or too bulky. Thanks to standard third-row seats, the Explorer comfortably seats up to seven occupants with loads of legroom, shoulder room, hip room, and headroom. Even with a packed house, the Explorer still touts 21 cubic feet of cargo space. If you need more room, fold the rear seats down to unveil 43.9 cubic feet of storage volume or both rows down for an impressive 80.7 cubic feet of room.

3. A Balance of Power and Efficiency

With the rising costs of raising a child, no parent wants to blow money at the gas pump needlessly. Thankfully, the 2019 Ford Explorer has three engine options that offer your ideal mix of power and efficiency. The standard engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 that offers 290 horsepower, up to 24 mpg on the highway, and 2,000 pounds of towing capacity.

The second option is a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that offers 280 horsepower, 2,000 pounds of towing capacity, and an impressive 27 mpg on the highway. For parents that like a little more giddy-up when the kids are away, try the 3.5-liter EcoBoost turbo V-6 that’s good for 365 horsepower, 22 mpg on the highway, and a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

With so many top-notch amenities catered toward families of all sizes, the 2019 Ford Explorer is arguably the best SUV option for parents and kids alike. From road trips to commutes and everything in between, the Ford Explorer does it all.
