Now that summer is finally here, you’re probably searching for activities that the entire family will enjoy. Fortunately, there are plenty of things to do in the West Liberty, Kentucky, area. Read on for four fun, summer ideas.

1. Explore Old Mill Park

Located on the banks of the scenic Licking River, Old Mill Park offers lots of things for visitors of all ages to see and do. Bring your fishing pole and try your hand at catching smallmouth bass, rock bass, or catfish. If you have a kayak or canoe, you can launch it from the park’s ramp. A beautiful rock garden provides a charming setting to sit back and enjoy the summer sun. 

If you prefer to get some exercise, check out the walking track that winds along the river. You can also take advantage of the park’s stationary workout station. Younger visitors will enjoy the playground. Old Mill Park also features several picnic areas and cookout spaces, making it the perfect place to celebrate summer birthdays and other special occasions. The natural amphitheater hosts some of the region’s best musicians. 

2. Tour Historical Monuments

West Liberty is home to several historical monuments commemorating events of local and national importance. Dedicated to the brave Americans who served in World War I, the Doughboy statue has sat in the old courthouse square since 1927. The courthouse square is also home to the Colonel William E. Barber monument. Barber, a native of Morgan County, served in World War II and the Korean War. For his service in Korea, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. A monument honoring women who have served in the U.S. Military sits in Tredway Memorial Park. It’s one of the few monuments honoring servicewomen in the country. 

3. Visit the Kentucky Folk Arts Center

Located on the campus of Morehead State University, just a half-hour drive from West Liberty, the Kentucky Folk Arts Center is home to more than 1,000 pieces created by local self-taught artists. The continually rotating exhibits also display fine art, textiles, photography, and historical artifacts. A visit to this unique museum is a fun way for visitors to learn about the Bluegrass State’s history and culture. Be sure to stop by the gift shop for whimsical Kentucky-themed items that you won’t find anywhere else. 

4. Go Camping

If you’re in the mood to get away from it all without going too far from home, there are several excellent campgrounds in Morgan County. Whether you want to stay in an RV or rough it in a tent, you’ll find a campsite that can accommodate you. Licking River Valley is a beautiful green gem in the summer season. Embark on an outdoor adventure to encounter several native birds and other wildlife. Best of all, when you’ve had your fill of the great outdoors, it’s just a short drive back home to West Liberty.
