Campers in Camping Tents

When you feel the need to get closer to nature and enjoy the great outdoors, a camping trip is the perfect solution. Whether you enjoy the primitive feel of tent camping or prefer the comfort of your RV, you don’t have to travel too far from West Liberty to find some idyllic spots.

Twin Knobs Recreation Area

Just a 30-minute drive from West Liberty is Twin Knobs Campground, which offers 700 acres of outdoor recreation with plenty of amenities. The site is located at Cave Run Lake in the Daniel Boone National Forest and has almost 200 campsites for tent and RV camping. Large RVs can be accommodated, and 141 of the sites have electrical hook-ups.

At the campground, you’ll find showers, flush toilets, drinking water, fire rings, and picnic tables and shelters. You can enjoy lovely trails with scenic overlooks, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and basketball goals. Boat ramps provide access to the lake, and the sandy beach has a roped-off swimming area.

Paintsville Lake Campground

Located at Paintsville Lake State Park less than one hour from West Liberty, Paintsville Lake Campground features 32 developed sites and 10 primitive camping sites. The developed sites offer showers, restrooms, sewer hookups, and laundry facilities. You can take advantage of the waterfront picnic tables with beautiful views of the lake.

Close to the campground is a full-service marina with rental fishing boats, pedal boats, pontoons, fishing supplies, and launching ramps. Two playgrounds provide entertainment for the kids, and there are basketball and volleyball courts and horseshoe pits. Almost 20 miles of trails offer opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park now offers a Wi-Fi connection with variable rates.

Koomer Ridge Campground

A little over 30 miles from West Liberty, Koomer Ridge Campground offers semi-primitive camping. The 54 sites are set within a tranquil forest setting and have vault and flush toilets, showers, drinking water, and picnic tables. RVs up to 35 feet can be accommodated on 15 sites but with no electric or water hookups and no dump station.

No reservations are taken, and sites are on a first-come, first-served basis. Some facilities are closed in the winter. The camp has access to around 6 miles of hiking trails in the Red River Gorge.

Zilpo Recreational Area

On the other side of Cave Run Lake from Twin Knobs is the Zilpo Campground, a family-friendly park with tent camping, cabin rentals, and RV sites with electric hook-ups. Each camping site has a fire ring and picnic table. Throughout the campground are showers, flush toilets, and drinking water faucets. The store sells food, firewood, ice, and camping gear.

Hikers can take the 2.25-mile Zilpo Mountain Loop, which connects to a network of other trails. You can enjoy the lake by water skiing, fishing, or swimming from the soft, sandy beaches, and there are excellent wildlife watching opportunities.

These are just a few of the campgrounds within easy reach of West Liberty that offer a natural escape and a variety of recreational activities.
